About Project
The project involved the engineering review, supply, installation, testing and commissioning of a three-pump cooling-water circulation system for a high-rise commercial development in Metro Manila.
The pumping system was designed to circulate condenser water between the building’s central chiller plant and cooling towers. It consisted of three horizontal end-suction centrifugal pumps arranged in a two-duty, one-standby configuration, providing sufficient capacity and operational redundancy for the facility’s air-conditioning system.
The scope included pump and motor installation, base-frame positioning, large-diameter piping connections, valves, flexible connectors, pipe supports, equipment alignment and system commissioning.
Our Client’s Challenge
The client required a reliable cooling-water pumping system capable of continuously supporting the building’s central air-conditioning plant under varying cooling loads.
The installation involved several technical considerations, including large-diameter piping, restricted equipment clearances, pipe-load control, vibration management and coordination with the cooling towers and chiller equipment.
The system also needed sufficient standby capacity to allow maintenance of one pump without interrupting cooling-water circulation throughout the building.
Our Approach And Solution
Solcrest reviewed the required flow rate, system pressure, equipment arrangement and available installation space before finalizing the pumping-system configuration.
The pumps were installed on fabricated steel base frames and properly anchored to reinforced concrete foundations. Precision alignment was completed between each pump and motor to minimize vibration, bearing loads and premature coupling wear.
Flexible connectors were installed at the pump connections to accommodate vibration and minor thermal movement. Dedicated pipe supports were provided so that the weight of the large-diameter piping would not be transferred directly to the pump nozzles.
The project scope covered:
- Review of pump capacity and total dynamic head
- Pump, motor and coupling inspection
- Equipment positioning and foundation preparation
- Installation of suction and discharge piping
- Installation of isolation and check valves
- Installation of flexible expansion connectors
- Fabrication and installation of pipe supports
- Pump and motor shaft alignment
- Electrical rotation and insulation checks
- Piping flushing and leak testing
- Operational testing of all pump units
- Verification of pressure, flow and vibration levels
- Turnover of commissioning and maintenance records
Project Outcome
The cooling-water circulation system was successfully commissioned and placed into service within the scheduled project period.
All three pumps operated within the required pressure and flow conditions, with acceptable vibration and motor-current readings. The two-duty, one-standby arrangement provided reliable cooling-water circulation while allowing individual pumps to be isolated for inspection and preventive maintenance.
The completed installation provided the facility with a dependable and maintainable pumping system capable of supporting continuous cooling operations under the climatic and operating conditions commonly encountered in the Philippines.
