What Is a Self-Bunded Diesel Storage Tank?

A self-bunded diesel storage tank is a tank built inside a second outer tank, with the sealed space between the two walls serving as secondary containment — rather than relying on a concrete bund wall constructed separately around it. The same tank is also called a double-wall diesel tank, a double-skin tank, or simply a bunded fuel tank, depending on which standard your project follows.

This double-wall construction makes above-ground diesel storage practical on sites with limited space, tight project schedules, or ground conditions where pouring a concrete containment structure isn’t viable. The interstitial space allows a leak to be detected before diesel ever reaches the soil — and because containment travels with the tank, the unit can be relocated to the next site instead of being abandoned along with its bund.

    SUMACube Ultra tanks are engineered and manufactured to UL 142, the international standard for steel above-ground tanks storing flammable and combustible liquids — third-party listed, giving you a proven benchmark for construction and safety.

    Capacity

    Tanks are available from 1,000 up to 500,000 litres as standard, with larger capacities possible depending on site evaluation. Because the tank is built panel-by-panel, capacity can be scaled simply by adjusting the number of panels used — no need to commit to a single fixed size upfront.

    Four models from 901 to 3,653 litres safe fill (238 to 965 US gallons), with brim capacities up to 3,845 litres. Sizing is driven by required generator runtime, or by refuelling interval for construction and fleet use.

    Because containment is integral, the installed footprint is the tank itself — no clearance allowance for a surrounding bund wall.

    Secondary Containment

    A removable inner tank sits inside the outer shell with 110% containment capacity — the same ratio a concrete bund is required to meet. The containment is part of the equipment, so it arrives with the tank instead of being built around it.

    Transport Certification

    All models are UL 142 certified for stationary use. Under UN 31A/Y — which caps transport at 3,000 litres — the NW-1000, NW-2000 and NW-3000 can be legally transported while filled. The NW-4000 is stationary use only and must be transported empty.

    Dispensing

    Optional PIUSI/SUMAC fuel transfer pump, 15 GPM (57 LPM), 12V standard. 110V/120V and higher-flow options available on request. Multiple port configurations allow up to three machines to be supplied at once.

    Standard fittings: 1½"–1" reducing bushing, 2" fusible cap, 2" pressure/vacuum vent, ¼" rollover vent valve, mechanical fuel gauge, port caps, and interstitial space drain port.

    UL 142 Listed

    The international standard for steel above-ground tanks storing flammable and combustible liquids. UL 142 governs materials, welding, joints, venting and leak testing, and it is what an insurer, lending bank, or foreign engineering reviewer looks for when a fuel installation is assessed. A fabricator's certificate of conformance does not carry the same weight.

    UN 31A/Y Approved

    Approval for the tank to be transported while containing product. This is the certification that lets you fill at the depot and move fuel to the working face, rather than decanting into drums. The 3,000-litre cap under UN 31A/Y applies to the NW-1000, NW-2000 and NW-3000; the NW-4000 is stationary use only.

    CAN/ULC-S601

    The Canadian standard for above-ground steel tanks for flammable liquids — a parallel certification route to UL 142, tested under a separate national listing body.

    CE Marked

    European conformity marking, covering the applicable directives for the equipment as supplied.

    Philippine Code Compliance

    Above-ground fuel storage in the Philippines falls under the Fire Code (RA 9514) and its IRR, which draws on NFPA 30 for flammable and combustible liquids. Secondary containment is a core requirement of both, and a self-bunded tank satisfies it as delivered — no separate containment structure to design, build, and have inspected before commissioning.

    Documentation

    Certification documents are supplied with every unit, along with a mechanical engineer's endorsement where the project requires one — signed by a licensed Professional Mechanical Engineer.

    Ports & Dispensing Configuration

    Every SUMACube Ultra ships with its fittings pre-installed on the manway cover, inside a lockable cabinet — configured so feed and return lines stay operational even when the tank is locked.

    Fill & Suction

    A 1.5" fill port handles depot or tanker filling, with a 3" fusible fill cap that closes automatically under fire exposure. Suction and pump feed ports are sized 1.5"–1" to accept the standard transfer pump or a customer-supplied unit.

    Venting

    Normal and working vents handle routine breathing as fuel is drawn off and as tank temperature cycles through the day. A 2" pressure/vacuum relief vent protects the shell against over-pressure and vacuum collapse, and a ¼" rollover vent valve seals the tank if it is tipped during transport or handling.

    Level Indication

    A mechanical fuel gauge is fitted as standard, with an optional electronic level sensor available through one of the three external manway ports — useful where fuel level needs to be monitored remotely or logged for consumption tracking.

    Multi-Machine Supply

    Multiple port options allow up to three machines to be supplied simultaneously — a generator on continuous feed and return, plus dispensing to equipment, without reconfiguring the tank between uses.

    Interstitial Monitoring

    A dedicated interstitial space drain port allows the containment void to be checked and drained. If fuel appears there, the inner tank has breached — giving you a positive leak indication before any product reaches the ground.
